Methodology and classification

This web application is a public-facing derivative of the Prayer for the Nations Master Dataset. The Master Dataset remains the authoritative research index if any derivative website view differs. The website provides search, sorting, aggregation, and links to primary sources.

Classification framework

Each published occurrence is classified according to the relationship between the named place and the wording of the message. The three classifications are intentionally kept distinct.

Direct Prayer

A high-confidence occurrence in which explicit prayer or intercession wording names the place. This is the default and most conservative prayer-request view. When determining whether a message explicitly requests prayer for a place, Direct Prayer is the controlling classification.

Prayer-Linked

The place has a meaningful grammatical connection to a prayer imperative, but the wording does not meet the stricter Direct Prayer standard. Prayer-Linked records are displayed separately so that a grammatical or contextual connection to prayer is not presented as though it were an unambiguous direct formulation such as “pray for X.”

Warning Only

A named place appears in a warning or related geographic statement but is not made the object of prayer in that occurrence. Warning Only records provide relevant geographic context, but they are not explicit prayer requests and must not be described as such.

Source hierarchy

The Prayer for the Nations Master Dataset is the authoritative index for indexed occurrences and their research classifications. For the original wording of a message, the official Revelaciones Marianas annual English PDFs are treated as the primary source. Message dates, speakers, PDF pages, and source wording are checked against those materials when source-level verification is required.

Geographic normalization

Original place wording is preserved in each record. Where the source supports it, a separate Normalized Country field may associate a locality, region, geographic feature, or historical place wording with a country for search and aggregation. Normalization does not replace the original wording and is not used to convert symbolic or ambiguous language into a specific country unless the source itself establishes that geographic identification.

Reason / Context

Reason / Context labels summarize the subject associated with an occurrence, such as earthquake or seismic activity, flooding or severe weather, war or armed conflict, fire, political or social unrest, or general suffering. These labels are research aids derived from the meaning of the occurrence; they are not generated merely from words contained in a place name.

Publication and withheld records

The Warning Review was subjected to a separate source-level reconciliation before Warning Only records were approved for public publication. Records that did not satisfy the publication criteria may remain withheld in the underlying research database for auditability. Withheld records do not appear in public search results and should not be treated as approved Warning Only occurrences.

Source fidelity

The index preserves, wherever available, the exact message date, speaker attribution, named place, PDF page, classification, Reason / Context, and source reference established during review. Original or historical place wording is preserved rather than silently modernized. Normalized fields used for searching are kept conceptually separate from the wording attributed to the source.

Research exclusions and conservative interpretation

A place name appearing in a message does not automatically qualify as a published prayer or warning occurrence. Historical or biblical comparisons, footnote-only references, false textual matches, symbolic language that does not identify a specific place, and other ambiguous occurrences may be excluded or withheld. This conservative approach is intended to avoid presenting an inferred geographic association as though it were stated explicitly in the source.

Private revelation

The messages indexed here are presented as reported Catholic private revelation. This database does not independently establish their supernatural origin, and Catholics are not obligated to believe private revelations. An Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat should not be confused with formal Church confirmation that a claimed private revelation is supernatural in origin.

Later events and claims of fulfillment

This database does not contain a “fulfilled prophecy” field. The occurrence of a later event resembling a warning does not, by itself, establish that a prediction was fulfilled. Questions about subsequent events require separate historical research using independent sources, with attention to chronology, geographic correspondence, magnitude or severity, and the ordinary baseline frequency of the type of event being considered.
